Sleep and Mental Health: The Two-Way Street4 min read

Why sleep matters so much
Sleep is when the brain consolidates memory, clears metabolic waste, and regulates mood-related neurotransmitters. Chronic sleep loss is linked to a higher risk of depression, anxiety disorders, and even relapse in people already in recovery.
The vicious cycle
Depression fragments sleep and causes early-morning waking. Anxiety keeps the mind racing at bedtime. In turn, poor sleep amplifies emotional reactivity the next day. Left alone, the loop tightens.
What actually works (before medication)
CBT for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia and outperforms sleeping pills in the long run. It targets the behaviors and thoughts that keep insomnia going.
Core ingredients you can start tonight:
- Consistent wake time, even on weekends — this anchors your circadian rhythm.
- Get out of bed after 20 minutes of tossing. The bed should mean sleep, not frustration.
- Morning light within 30 minutes of waking.
- Cut caffeine after noon. Its half-life is longer than most people think.
- Wind-down routine — dim lights, no screens in bed, no late scrolling.
When to ask for help
- Insomnia lasting more than three weeks
- Loud snoring, gasping, or witnessed apneas (screen for sleep apnea)
- Nightmares or trauma-related sleep disruption
- Sleep that feels non-restorative despite adequate hours
At Restore Wellness we screen for sleep problems in every psychiatric evaluation — treating the sleep piece often makes everything else respond faster.
